INSTALLATION GUIDE

There are plenty of people who like to have a go at DIY with laying fake turf, but we definitely realise the gap in quality of the finished product. The following is a basic layout of a typical application of synthetic grass on a crushed rock base:

STEP 1 – Excavate the area

Depending on how the job is presented, the area will usually need to be excavated to around 60-100mm below finish height. Mowing or poisoning the grass prior to this step can help to speed up this process. Machines will be used if access is granted, otherwise just a turf cutter, shovels and wheelbarrows. We always like to ensure the excavated area is as flat as possible, to ensure a consistent base thickness.

STEP 2 – Build up the crushed rock

Once any necessary drainage is installed, a 20mm grade crushed rock is brought in, levelled and compacted in different stages. Wetting the area adequately before compaction allows for a stronger result. This process is key to the overall performance of the area, and a poor base will result in low spots that will be prone to pooling water and mould growth.

STEP 3 – Finish off the base with crusher dust

A final layer of around 10-20mm is applied with a fine crusher dust to ensure a perfect smooth surface. Again it is levelled off before being wet and compacted. This prevents stones from being felt under-foot, and now we are ready for grass to be laid.

STEP 4 – Lay the artificial grass

Turf rolls will be laid out in a way that minimises wastage and seam number. Any seams are butted in tightly together and sealed using an outdoor synthetic grass adhesive. The grass will be trimmed into external surfaces, such as the house or other garden edging around the perimeter. Edges are pinned down as necessary to avoid any trip hazards and to protect the application.

STEP 5 – Groom in the sand product

A power-broom is run over the application to stand up the grass fibres. Then a specialty sicila sand, which is very fine and dry, is evenly spread over the entire job. The power-broom is used again alongside a leaf-blower to iron out any high spots and ensure an even coverage.
